"Bitcoin Miners Brace for EIA Crackdown - CEO Prepares to Counterattack"

Key Points

  • Dennis Porter, the CEO of Satoshi Action Fund, has alerted the crypto community about the pressure faced by Bitcoin miners in the US from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
  • The EIA has reportedly sent letters to Bitcoin miners demanding sensitive data and threatening heavy fines for non-compliance.
  • This move comes amidst concerns about the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.
  • Porter criticizes the EIA’s actions and highlights the potential of Bitcoin and crypto mining.
  • The Satoshi Action Fund plans to resist the EIA’s demands and is currently surveying the role of Bitcoin miners in stabilizing the US electric grid.

Dennis Porter, the CEO of Satoshi Action Fund, a non-profit organization, has issued a warning to the crypto community. He reveals that Bitcoin miners in the United States are allegedly under pressure from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

According to Porter, the EIA has sent letters to these miners. These letters demand that they provide sensitive data.

EIA Requires Sensitive Data from Bitcoin Miners

Porter shared a post on February 14. In this post, he alleges that the EIA has issued a new directive.

The directive demands that Bitcoin and other crypto miners comply within ten days. Failure to comply could lead to heavy fines exceeding $10,000 per day.

At the time of Porter’s post, it was unclear how many miners had received these demand letters. This comes amidst concerns from the US government about the potential environmental impact of Bitcoin mining.

Porter further reveals that the EIA is seeking data on miners’ locations, energy consumption, and suppliers. This is being done in collaboration with the federal government and citing emergency powers.

Porter Criticizes EIA’s Actions

Porter has strongly criticized the EIA’s actions. He believes this new directive is not how the US government should interact with a promising new industry.

He also highlights the innovative potential of Bitcoin and crypto mining in general. Supporters of crypto mining have previously stated that the practice could reshape energy management, production, and even power transmission in the United States.

Resistance Against EIA’s Directive

Despite the EIA’s directive, Porter states that Bitcoin miners in the country are eager to collaborate. With the right opportunity, miners can demonstrate the positive impact of the technology on the electric grid and its potential effects on the economy and environment.

In November 2023, the Satoshi Action Fund partnered with Brad Jones, the former CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). Together, they released a paper illustrating how Bitcoin mining can effectively capture methane, a gas known to harm the ozone layer.

The Satoshi Action Fund is planning to resist the EIA’s demands. However, details of this plan remain undisclosed.

Before this, they are conducting a survey to understand how Bitcoin miners are helping to stabilize the electric grid in the United States.

Criticism of EIA’s Focus

In early February, Lee Bratcher, the Texas Blockchain Council President, and Perianne Boring, the CEO of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, made a statement. They believe the EIA should focus on improving outdated energy infrastructure instead of targeting private companies.

They also criticized the crackdown on Bitcoin mining. They view it as a politically motivated move and an abuse of power.
