Key Points
Bitcoin supporter Fred Krueger has recently expressed unease about Ethereum’s (ETH) fundamental trends and potential regulatory issues. His comments, shared on X, highlighted notable statistics regarding Ethereum’s network activity and transactional utility.
Concerns over Ethereum’s Declining Utility
Krueger’s critique pointed out Ethereum’s increasing price, especially its recently achieved two-year high, contrasted with declining network usage. Despite Ethereum reaching $3,000, he noted a significant decrease in Daily Active Users (DAUs) from 120,000 in 2021 to just 66,000 in the past year.
He also brought attention to the decline in user activity on the blockchain’s top app, Uniswap V3, Ethereum’s leading decentralized exchange protocol. He noted that Uniswap V3 is only getting 16K DAUs, a significant decrease from the 60K or more in 2020. He argued that Ethereum as a chain is no longer used directly.
Krueger drew a comparison between Ethereum’s current status and a “meme coin,” noting similarities to assets like Shiba Inu (SHIB). Despite Ethereum’s price performance, he emphasized a perceived decline in its utility, especially when compared with alternative blockchain networks such as Solana, Avalanche, and Near.
Regulatory Concerns and Community Response
Krueger’s critique also extended to Ethereum’s regulatory outlook. He expressed doubts about the possibility of a spot Ethereum Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) approval, due to concerns over regulatory scrutiny. He concluded by advising to “Avoid ETH at all costs.”
Despite Krueger’s assessment, the Ethereum community remains confident. Many responded to Krueger’s post, countering his remarks. For instance, an X user named “n o k a” pointed out that Ethereum has a roadmap focused on scalability through a modular and rollup-centric approach. They argued that solely considering Daily Active Users (DAU) on the mainnet is misleading.
Another user, “John Doe,” argued that there has been a significant decline in total value locked (TVL) across the DeFi space. This indicates a trend of decentralized finance (DeFi) users reducing their risk exposure before potentially reinvesting in the future.
