Key Points
- Decentralized exchange (DEX) activity on Solana has increased significantly due to meme coin trading.
- Solana’s share of DEX volume is currently 29%, a significant rise from 1.1% a year ago.
Solana has seen a significant increase in DEX activity over the past few months.
This surge in activity is largely attributed to the trading of meme coins on the network.
Increasing Market Share
A year ago, Solana only held a 1.1% share of the DEX market while Ethereum dominated with a 50%-70% share.
However, Solana now holds 29% of the DEX market, compared to Ethereum’s 36%.
The increase in trading activity on Solana’s DEXes is mainly due to the memecoin frenzy on the network.
This boom followed large airdrops by Pyth Network and Jupiter, leading to the release of tokens worth around $290 million to Solana’s users.
Impact of Meme Coins
The creation of new tokens on the network, driven by meme-based assets, has reached all-time highs.
As trading activity increased, the values of Solana-based meme coins such as dogwifhat [WIF] and Bonk [BONK] also reached new all-time highs.
DEXes are preferred for trading these assets as centralized exchanges often delay listings due to their volatile nature.
This has led to a growth in activity on Solana-based DEXes as many try to capitalize on the current meme coin market rally.
Data shows that eight of the top ten trading pairs are meme coins paired with SOL.
The recent increase in Solana’s DEX activity has led to a rise in the chain’s decentralized finance (DeFi) total value locked (TVL), which currently stands at $2.90 billion.
Despite the high DEX volume, Solana has seen a decrease in user activity over the past few weeks.
Data reveals a 21% drop in the daily count of unique wallet addresses signing on-chain transactions on Solana since 31st January.
This decline in demand has led to a decrease in network fees and revenue.
The total value of daily transaction fees has dropped by 46% since 1st February.
For context, transaction fees on Solana totaled $1.2 million at the beginning of February.
However, as of 5 March, the total fee was $627,000.
Solana’s revenue from these fees has also declined.
As of 5 March, revenue from transaction fees was $313,000, a 46% decline from the $584,000 recorded in daily revenue on 1st February.
