$35 Million in Dormant Bitcoins Stir after a Decade: Unraveling the Mystery

Key Points

  • 500 Bitcoins, inactive for almost 12 years, were recently transferred to new wallets.
  • The movement of these old coins could be attributed to Bitcoin’s sell-side liquidity crisis.

A considerable amount of Bitcoin (BTC), which had been dormant for close to 12 years, has been moved to various new wallets. This has sparked interest within the wider cryptocurrency market.

The analytics firm Lookonchain reported that this Bitcoin stash, valued at $35 million at the time of writing, was obtained in July 2021. During that time, Bitcoin was worth a mere $7.57.

Reasons for Old Coin Movement

There is no definitive information available regarding the entity that made the transfer or the reasons behind it. However, if the popular belief that the wallet is preparing for a sell-off holds true, the profits would be a staggering 9247x.

There are several possible explanations for the sudden movement of old Bitcoins. One possibility is that the wallet holder was unable to access their Bitcoins due to lost private keys or a cold wallet. Once they regain access, they begin moving the Bitcoins.

Another possibility is that many long-term holders (LTH), who have patiently waited for Bitcoin’s price to skyrocket, could finally decide to sell and lock in their gains.

Bitcoin’s Sell-Side Liquidity Crisis

Ki Young Ju, CEO of the on-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant, linked the recent movement of old coins to Bitcoin’s sell-side liquidity crisis. This situation arises when there is a shortage of Bitcoins available for purchase, usually when demand significantly outstrips supply.

The introduction of spot ETFs has led to an insatiable demand for Bitcoin, particularly from institutional investors. However, Bitcoin’s production has been unable to keep up with this demand, resulting in a shortage of supply available for trading. As a result, old coins may start moving in an attempt to capitalize on the increased demand.
