Why an Ethereum ETF Launch in December Could Attract More Investors

Exploring the potential shift in SEC's stance amid recent Ethereum ETF developments

"Why an Ethereum ETF Launch in December Could Attract More Investors"

Key Points

  • The chances of Ethereum Spot ETFs getting approval have decreased due to limited engagement with the SEC and lack of public filing updates.
  • Despite this, industry experts remain hopeful for an eventual approval, drawing parallels with the Bitcoin ETF.

The odds of Ethereum Spot ETFs getting approved have taken a hit, mainly due to a lack of progress in the approval process. This is primarily due to the absence of updates in the public filings and limited interaction with the SEC. While approval could still occur before May, the likelihood is dwindling as there has been no noticeable advancement in the procedure.

Industry Optimism for Ethereum ETF Approval

Nonetheless, many in the industry remain hopeful about an eventual approval, drawing parallels with the Bitcoin ETF. Matt Hougan, CIO of Bitwise Asset Management, expressed similar sentiments during a conversation with Bankless. He believes that an Ethereum ETF will eventually be approved, describing it as the best shot that the Ethereum world has had.

Hougan also emphasized that cryptocurrency ETF approval follows a 240-day review cycle, which usually concludes in May. This is a critical time for SEC decisions. He suggested that Ethereum ETFs would attract more assets if they were launched in December rather than May. This belief is due to institutions still adjusting to the Bitcoin ETF launch. Hence, a launch towards the end of the year is seen as more practical, potentially leading to more assets being accumulated.

Ethereum Spot ETF vs Ethereum Futures

Some executives have been comparing a potential Ethereum Spot ETF to just an opening act. They believe that a lackluster performance of Ethereum Futures is a negative sign. However, Hougan contradicts this sentiment, stating that Ethereum ETFs will be far more successful than the Ethereum Futures.

Despite Ethereum not generating the same level of initial excitement as Bitcoin, Hougan remains optimistic about the potential success of Ethereum ETFs. He predicts that these ETFs will attract billions of dollars in their inaugural year, although their growth trajectory is expected to be slower compared to Bitcoin.

According to Ryan Rasmussen, CEO of Bitwise, as Ethereum gains mainstream recognition and understanding, the demand for Ethereum ETFs will grow. This demand will be driven by the desire to capitalize on Ethereum’s transformative potential. The SEC’s ongoing inquiry into Ethereum’s security classification and its decision on 23 May could significantly impact Ether ETF applications and Ethereum’s future trajectory.
