Key Points
- Kraken’s Head of Strategy, Thomas Perfumo, views Bitcoin’s fourth halving as symbolically significant.
- Market experts predict heightened sell pressure and potential bearish sentiment following the halving.
Bitcoin’s fourth halving has just taken place, marking a significant moment in the cryptocurrency’s history. The event saw Bitcoin reach a new all-time high of $73.7k just before the halving.
Symbolic Significance of the Halving
Thomas Perfumo, Head of Strategy at Kraken, discussed the symbolic importance of this fourth halving. He stated that it represents an alternative form of currency in a time of fluctuating conventional currencies, inflation, and interest rates.
Additionally, Perfumo highlighted the impact of the halving on Bitcoin’s supply schedule. He noted that following the halving, 94% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist has been mined, leading to less than 1% inflation in Bitcoin’s circulating supply.
Market Reactions to the Halving
However, many market observers anticipate increased sell pressure in the aftermath of the halving. Dan Dolev, Mizuho Securities Managing Director, suggested that the halving could trigger a “sell-the-news” event due to the extensive publicity surrounding it.
Geopolitical risks could also contribute to a bearish market sentiment. Tensions in the Middle East, for instance, could intensify following recent attacks between Israel and Iran. This could potentially lead to key support levels being cleared following the halving.
Despite these predictions, the price of Bitcoin remains highly volatile and could continue to fluctuate between its existing support and resistance levels post-halving.
