Ethereum Transaction Fees at an All-Time Low
On-chain data reveals that transaction fees on the Ethereum network are at a record low since October 2023.
This could have implications for the cryptocurrency.
The average transfer fee for Ethereum has recently plummeted to $1.12.
This information comes from on-chain analytics firm Santiment.
The fee refers to the amount that each sender must add to their transactions as payment for the blockchain to process their action.
The fee an investor might need to add for the transfer to go through quickly depends on network conditions at the time.
During high activity periods, there can be intense competition to get transactions processed quickly.
So, users in a hurry may have to pay higher fees to beat the traffic.
Hence, the average fee tends to be high during congestion periods.
Conversely, during periods of low activity, users can pay a lower amount.
This relationship means that average fees can offer insight into the current demand for using the Ethereum network.
The graph below illustrates how average fees on the Ethereum blockchain have changed over the past year:
As shown in the graph, the Ethereum average fees increased with the rally this year and peaked at $15.21 last month.
Interestingly, this fee peak happened near the asset price’s top.
According to the analytics firm, traders historically alternate between feeling that crypto is skyrocketing or dead, which is reflected in transaction fees.
Historically, the market tends to move against the majority’s expectations.
High fee periods, where FOMO is prevalent, often lead to price peaks.
This pattern aligns with past observations.
The chart shows that Ethereum fees decreased with the price after this peak.
Recently, the metric has continued to cool down, dropping to a low of just $1.12.
This is the network’s cheapest since last October.
Just as high fees can lead to peaks, low demand may result in bottoms for the cryptocurrency.
Santiment explains that the lack of demand and network strain over the past six weeks might help Ethereum and related altcoins recover sooner than expected.
Ethereum Price Status
Ethereum recovered to as high as $3,350 yesterday.
However, the asset appears to have already retraced this surge, as it’s now down to just $3,170.
