Key Points
- Japan’s currency decline is impacting Bitcoin and global finance dynamics.
- Bitcoin’s popularity is increasing due to investments and nation-state involvement.
The world of cryptocurrency has recently witnessed some significant changes, particularly in the case of Bitcoin (BTC).
A surprising development has occurred with Japan’s currency experiencing a drastic fall due to news of a new agreement with the United States. This agreement is designed to stop Japan’s central bank from offloading U.S. treasuries, thereby averting a potential doom loop for both nations.
Impact on Bitcoin
The question arising from these changes is how they will affect liquidity absorbers like Bitcoin. Dante Cook, head of Swan Business, voiced his concerns during a recent stream.
Cook warned of potential disaster for Japan and the U.S. due to Japan being the largest holder of U.S. treasuries, with only 4% of its forex reserves in gold and the rest almost entirely in U.S. treasuries.
He argued that without U.S. government intervention, Japan might need to sell its reserves to support its currency. This potential sell-off could create market uncertainty, leading to an influx of liquidity into Bitcoin.
Bitcoin’s Growing Acceptance
Cook also noted that recent shifts have had positive effects on Bitcoin. He cited a 13F-HR filing from May 7th, which showed that Susquehanna International Group purchased over $1 billion worth of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the first quarter of 2024.
Furthermore, more nation-states are recognizing Bitcoin’s potential and getting involved. Cook mentioned Argentina’s recent foray into Bitcoin mining as an example of this trend.
Blockware, a Bitcoin mining firm, predicted a 7% decrease in BTC’s difficulty starting May 9th. These examples illustrate Bitcoin’s increasing acceptance as traditional norms are challenged and new paradigms emerge.
