Ethereum Set to Eclipse Bitcoin According to Experts: Key Reasons Explained

Key Points

  • The debate over whether Ethereum will surpass Bitcoin in dominance continues.
  • While Ethereum’s status as a security or commodity is unclear, Bitcoin has a clear designation as a commodity.
  • In the years 2017-2018, the crypto community was engaged in a debate.
The question was whether Tron would overtake Ethereum to claim second place.
However, as things stand now, this debate is no longer relevant.

Ethereum has established itself as the leading smart contracts platform.
Despite this, comparisons between Bitcoin and Ethereum, the world’s most valuable altcoin, continue to be drawn.

    Could Ethereum Outperform Bitcoin?

A user on X suggests that Ethereum merely needs time to become the crypto leader.
The user cites several reasons for this belief, including Ethereum’s larger user base and the advantages of smart contracts.

According to CoinMarketCap data, Bitcoin has a market cap of over $1.3 trillion, with each coin trading for over $68,000 at the time of writing on May 28.
On the other hand, Ethereum holds the second spot.

Despite being one of the top performers in the last week, Ethereum’s coin is trading for over $3,800.
It has a market cap of over $465 billion at this level.

Bitcoin is approximately three times more valuable than Ethereum.
However, one analyst believes Ethereum is superior, despite Bitcoin’s larger market cap and first mover advantage.

The analyst notes that Ethereum has a significantly larger user base than Bitcoin.
This is because developers can launch protocols on the Ethereum platform.
Popular protocols like Uniswap and Aave generate more daily fees than Bitcoin.

Additionally, Ethereum serves as a store of value and a medium of exchange.
These features give it an advantage over Bitcoin, which primarily serves as a transactional layer for moving value trustlessly and cheaply across borders.

From an infrastructure perspective, the analyst argues that being an Ethereum validator is easier than running a Bitcoin mining rig.
Over 1.9 million Ethereum validators have staked at least 32 ETH for a chance to validate a block of transactions and earn rewards.
In contrast, Bitcoin mining requires specialized and often expensive hardware.

Ethereum ETF Listings Approval and Security Status

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) decision to approve spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF) listing is bullish.
However, whether Ethereum is a security or a commodity remains to be clarified.
Bitcoin, on the other hand, is clearly designated as a commodity.

The United States SEC has not explicitly declared Ethereum a security.
However, ConsenSys recently sued the agency, claiming they considered Ethereum a security internally.
This is in contrast to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a sister agency to the SEC, which categorizes Ethereum as a commodity.

Analysts believe that if the commission approves form S-1 for registration, it would be endorsing Ethereum as a commodity.
