Key Points
- Coinbase’s Q3 revenue decreased to $1.2 billion, indicating a decline in crypto trading activity.
- Despite the revenue drop, the company posted a $75 million profit, a significant improvement from the previous year’s loss.
Coinbase, a well-known crypto exchange, reported a decrease in its Q3 revenue on October 30th. The reported drop in revenue is indicative of a decline in crypto trading activity during the summer months.
The company’s revenue fell to $1.2 billion in Q3 2024, a decrease from $1.45 billion in the previous quarter. Despite the revenue drop, Coinbase managed to turn things around with a profit of $75 million.
Revenue Decline and Profit Turnaround
Coinbase saw a 27% drop in transaction fees compared to the previous quarter, due to declining trading volumes. The shareholder letter from the company highlighted ongoing market challenges and revealed a decrease in subscription and services revenue by 7%, totaling $556.1 million for the quarter.
Despite the challenges, Anil Gupta, Coinbase’s vice president of investor relations, remained positive. He noted the company’s fourth consecutive profitable quarter and emphasized the company’s focus on driving revenue, crypto utility, and regulatory clarity.
Stock Price and Future Outlook
In March, Coinbase’s stock price peaked at $279, driven by Bitcoin (BTC) reaching a record high of nearly $73,000. Although the stock price has since dipped to $211, it remains up 35% year-to-date.
Looking ahead, analysts project a potential dip in Coinbase’s trading volume due to a lack of strong market catalysts and election uncertainty. However, they remain cautiously optimistic, citing VP Kamala Harris’s endorsement of a digital asset regulatory framework as a potential driver for Coinbase trading activity in Q4.
Coinbase is also reinforcing its commitment to pro-crypto policy by contributing $25 million to Fairshake PAC, a move intended to support crypto-friendly candidates in the 2026 elections. This is expected to solidify its role in shaping favorable regulatory outcomes for digital assets.
