Key Points
- Large holders accumulated DeFi tokens as market sentiment showed early signs of improvement.
- Notable investors shifted holdings from Ethereum into selected decentralized finance assets.
Large cryptocurrency holders, often referred to as whales, have recently increased exposure to decentralized finance tokens amid improving market momentum.
Blockchain tracking data shows that three major wallets collectively withdrew about $15.9 million worth of DeFi-related assets from exchanges over a two-day period.
Whale Activity in DeFi Tokens
The accumulated tokens included PUMP, CLOUD, Kamino (KMNO), Jito (JTO), and DRIFT, with mixed short-term price movements observed across these assets.
While CLOUD and DRIFT recorded slight declines, PUMP and KMNO saw gains of more than 6%, and JTO posted a marginal increase.
Data also indicated continued interest from high-profile investors, including BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes, who has actively adjusted his portfolio toward DeFi assets.
Over the past two weeks, Hayes reportedly reduced his exposure to Ethereum and reallocated capital into tokens such as Pendle, Lido, Ethena, and Ether.fi.
Blockchain analytics platforms estimate that Hayes’ total altcoin holdings are valued at approximately $78.3 million based on recent wallet activity.
In contrast, another large holder deposited roughly $332 million worth of Ethereum to Binance, suggesting a potential sell-side move amid recent price weakness.
Market Sentiment and Broader Context
Since early October, the overall cryptocurrency market capitalization has declined by more than $1 trillion, reflecting sustained pressure across major assets.
Leading cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, remain significantly below their all-time highs after extended drawdowns.
Market sentiment indicators showed modest improvement by the end of December, with the Fear and Greed Index rising to 32 for the first time since early November.
Despite recent volatility and declines, analysts continue to outline scenarios for a broader recovery in digital assets, including higher long-term price targets for Ethereum under favorable conditions.
