Key Points
- Ethereum advanced technically in 2025, but its broader mission remains unfinished.
- Vitalik Buterin emphasizes scalability and decentralization over short-term crypto trends.
The price of Ethereum (ETH) rose in early trading after core network goals were outlined for the future.
Vitalik Buterin acknowledged that the network achieved notable technical improvements over the past year.
He also stated that these achievements do not fully satisfy Ethereum’s original purpose.
According to Buterin, development efforts will continue to focus on positioning Ethereum as a global “world computer.”
Ethereum’s Recent Technical Progress
In a New Year’s message shared on X, Buterin highlighted several upgrades completed during 2025.
These upgrades included increased gas limits, higher blob capacity, improved node software, and major performance gains in zkEVM technology.
He explained that these changes made the network faster, more resilient, and better prepared for higher activity without compromising decentralization.
The network processed greater transaction volumes and reduced operational bottlenecks while improving accessibility for node operators.
Buterin stated that these developments bring Ethereum closer to being a shared computing platform rather than simply another blockchain.
Despite the progress, he stressed that Ethereum should not focus on chasing popular crypto narratives or short-term usage spikes.
He cautioned against prioritizing trends such as tokenized fiat currencies or meme-based assets solely to boost activity metrics.
Focus on the “World Computer” Vision
Buterin reiterated that Ethereum’s long-term vision centers on applications resistant to fraud, censorship, and external control.
He emphasized that such applications should remain functional even if their original developers are no longer involved.
To succeed, Ethereum must scale globally while preserving genuine decentralization, according to his statement.
This balance will influence protocol development, node software design, and the structure of applications built on the network.
Meanwhile, recent ETH price movements aligned with market expectations of a potential upward trend entering 2026.
Several analysts previously suggested that Ethereum could see further gains following the end of 2025.
At the time of reporting, Ethereum (ETH) was trading near $3,046, reflecting a modest increase over the previous 24 hours.
