MicroStrategy $8.6B Q2 Loss Shows Bitcoin Price Drives Entire Balance Sheet

An $8.32B fair-value write-down on its Bitcoin holdings erased operating gains, exposing how deeply the company’s quarterly performance is now tied to crypto market volatility rather than core business fundamentals.

MicroStrategy $8.6B Q2 Loss Shows Bitcoin Price Drives Entire Balance Sheet

Key Points

  • Strategy reported $8.6 billion Q2 loss driven by fair-value decline in Bitcoin holdings.
  • Financial results largely reflected Bitcoin price movements rather than core operations.

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported a GAAP net loss of $8.6 billion for the second quarter of 2026, alongside an operating loss of $8.3 billion.

The losses were primarily linked to an $8.32 billion non-cash unrealized decline in the value of its Bitcoin holdings under fair-value accounting rules.

Quarterly revenue reached $122.37 million, slightly below the $122.93 million analyst consensus, while diluted earnings per share came in at negative $24.45 compared with expectations of positive $0.79.

The results reflected the impact of digital asset pricing on reported earnings, with balance sheet performance closely tracking Bitcoin’s market value during the period.

Q2 Holdings and Balance Sheet Changes

At the start of the quarter, the company held approximately 762,099 BTC valued at about $51.6 billion.

It added a net 83,901 BTC at an average purchase price near $75,500 per coin, bringing total holdings to 843,775 BTC by June 30, representing an 11% quarter-over-quarter increase.

By quarter’s end, Bitcoin’s price had declined to roughly $58,700, contributing to the reported fair-value loss.

Long-term debt decreased from $8.2 billion to $6.7 billion after the repurchase of $1.5 billion in convertible debt at an 8% discount.

Preferred equity rose from $9 billion to $14.4 billion, primarily due to the issuance of STRC, described as a digital credit instrument.

Cash and short-term investments totaled $2.4 billion at the end of June and later increased to $3.75 billion as of July 27, according to company executives.

During the quarter, Strategy raised $8.4 billion in capital, including $5.5 billion through digital credit offerings, marking its largest single-quarter capital raise to date.

Total reserves, including Bitcoin and cash, stood at $58.5 billion as of July 27, with management citing reserve amplification relative to net reserves after accounting for debt and preferred equity claims.

Management Commentary and Market Reaction

Executives stated that Bitcoin per share rose to 210,824 satoshis from 201,170 at the end of the first quarter.

Management indicated that the company holds approximately 4% of the total Bitcoin supply that will ever exist and described itself as the largest institutional holder by its internal calculations.

Leadership also emphasized plans to expand credit infrastructure built around Bitcoin, identifying STRC as a central product within that strategy.

The company announced a $1 billion buyback program intended to support STRC’s market price within a specified trading range.

Following the earnings release, shares declined 0.13% in after-hours trading to $97.62 from a regular-session close of $97.74.

The stock remains below its 52-week high of $414.36 and above its 52-week low of $81.81, a range that has generally tracked movements in Bitcoin’s price over the same period.
