Key Points
On February 20th, Bitcoin ETFs saw a remarkable surge in daily volume and inflows. Crypto analysis tool Santiment reported a combined volume of $6.94 billion across seven ETFs. This is the highest daily volume recorded since the SEC approved these ETFs in January.
Issuers involved in the surge included Bitwise [BITB], Fidelity [FBTC], BlackRock [IBIT], Ark 21Share [ARKB], Invesco Galaxy [BTCO], vanEck [HODL], and Grayscale [GBTC]. This indicates a growing investor exposure to Bitcoin.
Increased Volume and Investor Exposure
Eric Balchunas, a senior analyst at Bloomberg, noted that HODL’s volume had increased 14 times its usual average. Balchunas stated that these trades involved approximately 32,000 individuals. While unconfirmed, this suggests that VanECK may have expanded its offering to other platforms.
However, the high ETF activity does not necessarily impact Bitcoin’s demand and supply curve. This is because investors are not directly purchasing and storing the cryptocurrency. As a result, Bitcoin’s price remains unaffected, with the cryptocurrency trading at $51,685 at the time of reporting.
For Bitcoin’s price to rise, retail demand must be exceptionally high. However, this does not appear to be the case currently. Data from Google Trends indicates that interest in Bitcoin is lower among retail investors compared to the period between January and November 2021.
During this period, Bitcoin reached its all-time high (ATH). This suggests that the cryptocurrency has significant potential to surpass $69,000 in this cycle. However, if institutions continue to dominate the volume in the coming months, Bitcoin may struggle to reach this figure.
Long-term technical analysis suggests a promising outlook for Bitcoin. The 50 EMA (blue) has crossed over the 200 EMA (yellow), indicating a bullish bias for the cryptocurrency. The Accumulation/Distribution (A/D) indicator also shows an increase, suggesting that buying pressure is on the rise.
However, Bitcoin may enter a distribution period, which could see the price fall below $51,000. Despite this, the price could potentially reach an astronomical high in the coming months.
