Bitcoin Exchange Reserves Spike as Market Awaits Fresh Demand

Rising inflows to exchanges are increasing sell-side pressure as Bitcoin hovers near $78,000, highlighting the need for new buyers to sustain the rally.

Bitcoin Exchange Reserves Spike as Market Awaits Fresh Demand

Key Points

  • Bitcoin pulled back sharply as oversold signals met exchange inflows from whales, miners, and mid-term holders.
  • Weak spot and derivatives data indicate sustained sell-side pressure and limited short-term demand.

Bitcoin (BTC) fell to around $74,000 after losing November support before rebounding near $78,000 during a short-term relief move.

The decline weakened short-term momentum, with broader market conditions contributing to heightened volatility.

Technical indicators show the 14-day Relative Strength Index entering deeply oversold territory amid persistent downside pressure.

According to Glassnode, rising spot trading volume during the drop reflected reactive repositioning rather than new demand entering the market.

Exchange Inflows and On-Chain Signals

On-chain data from CryptoQuant showed increased transfers of BTC to Binance by whales and mid-term holders aged six to twelve months.

Roughly 5,000 BTC from this cohort moved to the exchange on February 2, marking the largest inflow from these holders since early 2024.

Wallets holding more than 1,000 BTC also transferred about 5,000 BTC to the same venue on the same day, matching a similar spike seen in mid-December.

After the December inflow, prices initially held but later fell below $80,000, highlighting delayed market reactions to added supply.

Risk-Off Market Conditions

Miner activity added to exchange supply, with approximately 175,000 BTC transferred during January amid several daily spikes nearing 10,000 BTC.

These movements occurred while prices traded near $95,000 earlier in the month, preceding the slide toward late-January levels.

Large transfers increase spot market liquidity, which can pressure prices if demand remains subdued.

Glassnode data indicated weak spot conditions, declining cumulative volume delta, and continued sell-side dominance despite slower ETF outflows.

Derivatives markets reflected reduced risk appetite, with easing open interest, cooler funding rates, and ongoing leveraged selling visible in perpetual contracts.
