On May 27th, Memorial Day in the United States, a marked divergence was observed in the financial markets.
While traditional stock markets like the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) were closed, the cryptocurrency market was in full swing.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Surge
Bitcoin soared to the $70,000 mark, accompanied by significant gains in various altcoins. Ethereum also briefly touched the $4,000 level, adding to the overall market buzz.
Santiment’s X noted the encouraging climb in Bitcoin’s value, highlighting the crypto market’s potential to perform independently of the stock market.
TheoTrader also predicted a bullish week following Memorial Day, based on past data.
Unusual Market Trend
This trend, however, was out of the ordinary. Bloomberg reported that crypto market volume typically drops during the Memorial Day period, with decreases of 43% and 35% in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
But 2024 was marked by new events and unexpected market trends, with Memorial Day being one of them. Ryan Detrick, Chief Market Strategist at CarsonGroupLLC, commented on the unusual market activity.
In election years, stock prices have historically fluctuated leading up to Memorial Day, often followed by a summer rally. Whether this pattern will hold true this year remains to be seen, given the stock market closure on Memorial Day.
In the always-open crypto market, early signs of future trends are already emerging. While traditional assets continue to follow seasonal patterns, the independence and volatility of the cryptocurrency market present both opportunities and challenges for investors.
