Key Points
- The total Bitcoin Open Interest has lost nearly $1 billion in value between May 23 and May 24.
- Bitcoin’s social dominance has dropped to 7.07%, suggesting attention is shifting to other cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin’s [BTC] Open Interest (OI) has seen a significant decrease, losing approximately $1 billion in value within a day. On May 23, the OI stood at $11.75 billion, but at press time, it had declined to $10.77 billion. OI represents the value of outstanding positions in a contract.
In the world of crypto trading, a trade involves a buyer and a seller. When OI rises, it implies that fresh money is entering the market, favoring the buyers. This trend is generally indicative of a bullish trend. However, if the metric becomes too high, the OI can serve as a bearish sign. Conversely, a decrease in Open Interest suggests an increase in closed positions, which favors sellers.
Shift in Market Interest
The current trend suggests that traders are not initiating new positions, which is a bearish sign for Bitcoin’s price. At press time, BTC was trading at $67,123, a 3.52% decrease in the last 24 hours. This decline in Bitcoin’s price could also be linked to the recently approved Ethereum spot ETFs.
It appears that traders are moving their capital into ETH and other altcoins. If this trend continues, BTC could see a further drop, potentially falling to $65,000 in the short term.
Social Dominance and Funding Rate
Another factor considered is social dominance, which has dropped to 7.07% for Bitcoin. This decrease implies that discussions related to the cryptocurrency have fallen, suggesting that market attention is shifting elsewhere. If social dominance continues to fall, the prediction of $65,000 could be realized.
Additionally, Bitcoin’s Funding Rate was at 0.01%. This metric is the cost of holding an open contract in the market. If the funding rate is positive, it implies that the contract price is trading at a premium compared to the spot value. With the funding rate moving lower and the price decreasing, Bitcoin could remain bearish in the short term. However, a rebound in price may not be far off.
