Brad Garlinghouse Positions Ripple as the Backbone of the Internet of Value

Brad Garlinghouse Positions Ripple as the Backbone of the Internet of Value

Key Points

  • Ripple highlights XRP Ledger as fast, low-cost payment infrastructure for institutions.
  • Architecture, regulation, and ODL growth key to XRP’s institutional adoption.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse described the XRP Ledger as specialized payment infrastructure capable of settling transactions in three to five seconds at minimal cost.

He noted that the network has processed more than four billion transactions since 2012 and presented it as a foundation for an “Internet of Value.”

Garlinghouse traced the ledger’s origins to former Bitcoin developers, arguing that its technical design differentiates it from both Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The messaging signals a shift toward institutional users, including banks and treasury managers, rather than retail investors.

Following the remarks, XRP traded at $1.38, down 3.2% amid a broader digital asset market pullback that erased over $100 billion in total market capitalization.

XRP Ledger Architecture and Institutional Focus

The XRP Ledger uses a Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus mechanism and a Unique Node List to validate transactions without mining.

This structure avoids the energy demands of Bitcoin’s proof-of-work and differs from Ethereum’s programmable settlement model.

Transactions reach finality in roughly three to five seconds, compared to longer confirmation times on major networks.

The ledger can handle around 1,500 transactions per second with fees averaging about $0.0002.

Its design centers on payments and liquidity flows, incorporating features such as a built-in decentralized exchange and payment channels.

Ripple also aligns the ledger with ISO 20022 messaging standards to support interoperability with traditional banking systems.

Payments Strategy and Regulatory Positioning

Ripple distinguishes XRP’s payment-focused architecture from Ethereum’s broader smart contract and decentralized finance ecosystem.

The company argues that cross-border payments and correspondent banking require specialized infrastructure rather than general-purpose programmability.

In May 2026, a live cross-border redemption of tokenized U.S. Treasuries on the XRP Ledger involved JPMorgan, Mastercard, and Ondo Finance, demonstrating operational use.

A July 2023 court ruling determined that XRP sales on public exchanges did not constitute investment contracts, providing regulatory clarity cited as important for institutional participation.

Ripple has also advanced its compliance strategy through acquisitions and the approval of the RLUSD stablecoin.

Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity service uses XRP as a bridge asset to reduce reliance on pre-funded accounts in cross-border transfers.

In this structure, XRP acts as a transient liquidity tool, while RLUSD supports fiat-pegged settlement for institutions prioritizing price stability.

The relationship between Ripple’s infrastructure expansion and direct XRP demand remains dependent on ODL corridor growth and transaction volume data over the coming quarters.

Key metrics include scaling in corridors where eliminating pre-funding could materially reduce capital costs for financial institutions.
