Key Points
- Ethereum’s spot ETFs are anticipated, with the cryptocurrency predicted to reach $5,000.
- Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed changes to the network’s penalty system to promote decentralization.
Ethereum [ETH] is back in the limelight as the crypto market anticipates the approval of spot ETH ETFs.
Currently, Ethereum is trading at $3,580.82, but with increasing investor interest, it could potentially surge to $5,000.
Centralization Concerns
However, amidst this optimism, worries about the risk of centralization in ETH staking have surfaced.
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, recently shared his intention to boost decentralization within the network by adjusting its penalty system in a blog post.
He explained that a strategy to encourage better decentralization in a protocol is to increase penalties for correlations.
This implies that if a participant in the Ethereum network behaves improperly, whether intentionally or accidentally, their penalty would be heightened if other participants, as determined by the total ETH involved, exhibit similar misconduct at the same time.
Addressing Correlated Failures
The rationale behind this suggestion is the occurrence of correlated failures due to shared infrastructure.
Buterin highlighted this on X, stating that validators in the same cluster, such as the same exchange or user, are more likely to miss attestations simultaneously than unrelated validators.
He suggested that reward adjustments could favor decentralized staking.
This demonstrates Ethereum’s capability to swiftly respond to concerns and challenges, maintaining its status as the leading alternative coin.
This isn’t the first time Buterin has proposed potential solutions for the Ethereum network.
During the Ethtaipei 2024 event in Taiwan on March 21st, he introduced the concept of “Rainbow Staking” to encourage decentralized participation.
This innovative framework aims to provide alternative routes for investors interested in solo staking or participating in staking pools.
Buterin’s concern about centralization became noticeable when Lido Finance gained control of 70% of Ethereum-staked assets.
These proactive measures underscore Ethereum’s dedication to addressing centralization concerns and maintaining its industry leadership.
