Can BlackRock’s iShares Staked Ethereum Trust Deliver Major Gains for Investors?

Key Points

  • BlackRock launches first US spot Ethereum ETF with native staking and reduced introductory fee.
  • ETHB integrates staking rewards, intensifying competition among Ethereum spot ETFs.

BlackRock has introduced the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ETHB), the first US spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund to incorporate native staking.

The fund began trading on Nasdaq on March 12 with a temporary sponsor fee of 0.12% for the first year or until assets reach $2.5 billion.

This reduced fee is lower than the standard 0.25% rate and is designed to attract early inflows in a competitive market.

By embedding staking within the ETF structure, the product aims to provide yield exposure without requiring investors to manage validator nodes or digital asset custody.

Fee Structure and Staking Model

According to BlackRock’s prospectus, between 70% and 95% of the fund’s Ethereum (ETH) holdings will be staked under typical market conditions.

Staking rewards generated on the network are converted into cash and distributed to shareholders as monthly dividends.

The standard expense ratio remains 0.25%, consistent with other similar products, though the promotional waiver reduces it by half initially.

An 18% service fee applies to staking rewards, shared between BlackRock and its custodial partner Coinbase for validation services.

This structure allows investors to access staking income while avoiding direct operational involvement in the network.

Positioning in the Spot Ethereum ETF Market

The launch introduces a new dynamic among spot Ethereum ETFs by combining price exposure with staking yield.

Existing spot products generally provide only asset price tracking, meaning investors do not participate in on-chain staking returns.

The addition of staking may shift capital toward products that offer both exposure and yield.

Industry data cited by ETF.com indicates that fee reductions are increasingly central to competition in the crypto ETF sector.

BlackRock’s pricing strategy mirrors earlier approaches used in crypto-related ETF launches aimed at rapidly building assets under management.
