Coinbase Faces Scrutiny Over Early Ties to Jeffrey Epstein Investments

Key Points

  • Documents link Jeffrey Epstein to an early investment connected to Coinbase.
  • Industry figures disputed or clarified their alleged involvement following public scrutiny.

An American cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase came under online scrutiny over a decade-old investment linked to financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Public debate emerged after records indicated Epstein may have invested roughly $3 million through venture fund Blockchain Capital in 2014.

Epstein Files Raise Questions About Crypto Investments

The United States Department of Justice released documents suggesting Epstein invested via Brock Pierce’s Blockchain Capital.

These disclosures prompted online researchers to search for supporting documents and correspondence related to the reported investment.

Released emails from July 2014 referenced discussions involving seed funding and included Austin Hill, a Blockstream co-founder, alongside Epstein and Joi Ito.

Bitcoin researcher Kyle Torpey stated the files showed extensive discussion about investing, though it remained unclear if the deal was completed.

Additional documents suggested Epstein later sold approximately half of his reported stake back to Blockchain Capital for about $11 million.

Responses From Industry Figures

Blockstream CEO Adam Back was also cited in discussions, leading to public reaction and questions about potential ties.

Back released a statement denying any direct or indirect financial connection between Blockstream and Epstein or his estate.

He explained that interactions occurred after introductions at a 2014 investor roadshow involving Ito’s investment fund.

Amid ongoing attention, Coinbase continued expanding its product offerings, including a prediction markets initiative developed with Kalshi.
