Crypto Market Plunges: Bitcoin & Ethereum Lead the Downward Trend Today

Key Points

  • Bitcoin and Ethereum are experiencing significant market corrections, with Bitcoin testing the $56,000 support level.
  • Despite the downturn, 2024 is still expected to be a bullish year for cryptocurrencies.

The cryptocurrency market is currently experiencing a significant downturn, with leading cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum undergoing major corrections.

Bitcoin, in particular, is struggling around the $56,000 support level, with technical indicators suggesting the possibility of a reversal. The entire market appears to be in the red, with Bitcoin and Ethereum suffering the most significant drops, falling below their critical support levels.

Market Sentiments and Expectations

Bullish sentiments within the cryptocurrency community seem to have dwindled, with investors appearing to panic and possibly on the brink of surrender. Despite the current state of the market, 2024 is still widely expected to be a bullish year, although the market is currently undergoing a strong correction phase.

Data from Coinglass suggests that both Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen more inflows than outflows in the past 24 hours, with relatively low liquidations. On May 10th, major U.S. banks JPMorgan and Wells Fargo disclosed holdings of spot Bitcoin ETFs, although this announcement has had little impact on overall market dynamics.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Outlook

Bitcoin appears to be stuck in an extended correction cycle, testing investor patience. The immediate support level for Bitcoin is around $56,000, with traders expecting a breakout. Data from TradingView suggests a collision of fear and optimism, with traders torn between hope for a breakout and fear of further decline.

Bitcoin is retesting its former all-time high resistance levels, now as new support zones. This activity indicates a typical case of RSI Bullish Divergence on the 4-hour chart, suggesting that the downtrend’s momentum may be losing steam and could soon reverse.

The community generally expects an eventual breakout, which could potentially propel Bitcoin’s value to new heights, possibly reaching as high as $78,000 in the bullish surges to come. Ethereum, on the other hand, is showing a slightly different trajectory. The Ethereum derivatives market is showing signs of increased activity and investor interest, according to Glassnode.

Open Interest in Ethereum has surged by 50%, indicating strong engagement with Ethereum’s financial products. Despite these positive indicators in derivatives, Ethereum’s performance relative to Bitcoin this cycle is much slower. The lag in speculative interest, particularly from the Short-Term Holder group, suggests a cautious approach among these investors.

Long-Term Holders seem to be waiting on the sidelines, looking for more profitable opportunities in future rallies. At the time of writing, Ethereum was worth $2,897. Despite the current market downturn, the growing interest in its derivatives suggests that these holders may soon see the favorable conditions they are waiting for.

In conclusion, the current retreat is due to market consolidation, with experts still expecting a breakout. Investors are advised not to give up, as 2024 is still expected to be a strong year for cryptocurrencies.
