Key Points
The Ethereum (ETH) community is eagerly awaiting updates on the approval of a spot Ethereum Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF), which is expected by May.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has yet to comment on the matter, leading to increased speculation on the approval’s likelihood.
This speculation is amplified by the lack of concrete details about the approval process, causing concern and anticipation among investors and enthusiasts.
Views on Ethereum Spot ETF Approval
In the discussion surrounding the spot Ethereum ETF, prominent figures in the cryptocurrency world have shared their opinions.
Notably, Max Keiser, a well-known Bitcoin maximalist and advisor to the president of El Salvador, has expressed skepticism about the SEC’s cautious approach to approving an Ethereum ETF.
Keiser, who is known for his strong support of Bitcoin and skepticism towards other cryptocurrencies, dismissed Ethereum as a “proof-of-stake scam,” implying that it lacks the necessary regulatory support for SEC approval.
Keiser’s views are echoed by Bloomberg’s Senior ETF Analyst, Eric Balchunas, who also recently expressed a conservative view on the chances of an ETH spot ETF receiving regulatory approval.
Balchunas estimated the chances of approval at a mere 25%, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the possibility of an Ethereum ETF.
Moreover, VanEck CEO Jan Van Eck expressed expectation of a potential rejection of their Ethereum ETF application, citing extended regulatory reviews and a lack of clarity from the SEC.
Despite the uncertainty about the US SEC’s stance on Ethereum ETFs, reports suggest a contrasting regulatory environment in Hong Kong.
According to Bloomberg, Hong Kong regulators may soon approve exchange-traded funds investing directly in Bitcoin and Ethereum, indicating a potential shift in global regulatory attitudes towards cryptocurrency investment products.
If approved, these ETFs could provide investors with new opportunities to gain exposure to the digital asset market.
Several firms are ready to launch ETFs pending regulatory clearance from the Securities and Futures Commission.
Among the potential issuers awaiting approval are the international branches of Chinese asset manager Harvest Fund Management Co. and a partnership between Bosera Asset Management (International) Co. and HashKey Capital.
Upon receiving regulatory approval, these companies have stated their intention to launch ETFs investing in BTC and ETH, underlining the growing demand for cryptocurrency investment products in global markets.
