Ethereum Network Struggles as Whales Assemble: Enough to Trigger a Revival?

Ethereum Whales Gather Amidst Network Instability: Grappling with Decreased Gas Usage and Overall Activity

Ethereum Network Struggles as Whales Assemble: Enough to Trigger a Revival?

Key Points

  • Ethereum’s gas usage and overall activity have seen a significant decline.
  • Despite the dip, whales and retail investors are showing interest in Ethereum as prices surge.

Ethereum (ETH) has been facing a challenging week, with its price witnessing a substantial drop. But it’s not just the prices that have been affected.

The median gas of Ethereum dropped to a record low of 12.5 gwei this year. According to data from Dune Analytics, at the time of writing, the network’s gas stood at 8 gwei.

Shift in User Preference

This decrease in gas usage is due to users shifting their preference to other blockchains like Solana (SOL) and Base. While lower gas fees might seem advantageous for users, it could indicate a decrease in demand for transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.

A decrease in activity might signal a slowdown in user engagement or dApp usage, potentially having negative consequences for the Ethereum ecosystem. The number of smart contracts deployed on the Ethereum network has also fallen, hinting at a decrease in developer activity and innovation within the ecosystem.

Price Surge and Whale Interest

Despite the dip in activity, Ethereum’s price has started to rebound. Over the last 24 hours, the price of ETH has increased by 5.61%, trading at $3,242.75 at the time of writing. This price surge could be attributed to increased interest from whales.

Data analysis from Santiment revealed a significant increase in the percentage of large addresses holding ETH. While this surge in price driven by whale interest may seem positive, it could potentially have negative implications for the broader Ethereum ecosystem.

Increased concentration of ETH in the hands of large addresses could lead to heightened market manipulation and volatility, as these entities have a significant influence on price movements.

In addition to whales, the total number of addresses holding ETH has also increased, indicating that retail investors are also showing interest in Ethereum. However, ETH’s velocity has declined, suggesting a decrease in the frequency of ETH transactions, which could potentially impact prices in the future.
