Understanding Verkle Trees
Verkle trees combine vector commitments and Merkle trees. They streamline the way Ethereum nodes validate transactions and state changes. These trees significantly reduce the size of proofs needed to validate the blockchain’s state.
Verkle trees have a much flatter structure than their predecessors. This means fewer intermediate nodes will connect a leaf (transaction or state change) to the root (the starting point of the tree).
In December 2021, Buterin outlined Ethereum’s roadmap. He highlighted five critical developmental phases: The Merge, The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge.
The implementation of Verkle trees is the first step towards achieving the “Verge” phase of Ethereum’s development. This phase aims to improve the network’s scalability and reduce its carbon footprint. The upgrade will decrease the hardware requirements for running an Ethereum node, promoting greater decentralization. Additionally, the smaller proof sizes will facilitate faster network synchronization and state verification.
The Verkle trees upgrade also introduces improvements for solo staking. It could make solo staking more accessible to individual validators by reducing the operational costs and technical barriers of running a node.
With Verkle, nodes can join the network instantly. This could be beneficial for staking. It also opens the door for potential scaling benefits and improved gas limits.
Buterin expressed his anticipation for Verkle trees on social media. He stated that they would enable stateless validator clients, which could allow staking nodes to run with near-zero hard disk space and sync almost instantly.
