Key Points
Profitability Among Ethereum Investors
On-chain data reveals that 90% of all Ethereum investors are now profitable. This follows a significant price increase of the asset beyond $3,800.
As per IntoTheBlock data, Ethereum’s recent rally has caused a shift in investor profitability on the network.
The analytics firm uses on-chain data to track holder profitability. They determine the average acquisition price or cost basis of each address on the blockchain.
If the cost basis for any address is less than the current spot value of the cryptocurrency, that investor is considered to be in profit. IntoTheBlock refers to this as being “in the money”.
Conversely, if the cost basis is lower than the asset’s price, the address is experiencing a net loss. The holder is then considered “out of the money”.
If the average purchase price of the wallet equals the spot price of the coin, the investor is considered to be breaking even or “at the money”.
Following Ethereum’s sharp rally, the profitability breakdown of the Ethereum userbase is as follows:
As shown, 90% of the total addresses on the Ethereum network are holding their coins at some net unrealized gain after the asset’s sharp price surge.
Interestingly, no wallets are out of the money, meaning no one on the blockchain is experiencing losses. However, 10% of investors are still breaking even.
Historically, profitable holders are more likely to sell than those in loss. Therefore, when the market sees a large imbalance towards profitable investors, a selloff is more likely.
High profitability ratio levels can make price tops more probable in the cryptocurrency. With a large number of Ethereum investors now carrying gains, a mass profit-taking event could potentially occur, potentially impacting the current rally.
However, during bull markets, the asset can often sustain high investor profits for a while. High demand continues to absorb any profit-taking before a top eventually occurs.
The likelihood of temporary cooldowns can increase if profitability remains high for too long. It is yet to be seen how the Ethereum price will develop and whether the excitement around the spot ETFs will counteract any potential market selloffs.
