Key Points
- Ethereum’s price rally on May 3 led to a two-month high in short liquidations.
- Despite the price rally, ETH’s derivatives market saw only minor activity increase.
On May 3, a 7% price surge in Ethereum (ETH) triggered a spike in short liquidations on its derivatives market, reaching a two-month high.
This information was disclosed by on-chain data provider Coinglass, which also revealed that $35 million worth of ETH’s short positions were liquidated on that day. In comparison, long liquidations were much lower at $7.16 million.
Understanding Liquidations
Liquidations occur in the derivatives market when a trader’s position is forcibly closed due to a lack of funds to maintain it. Short liquidations happen when an asset’s value suddenly rises, forcing traders who have open positions favoring a price drop to exit their positions.
According to data from Santiment, the altcoin closed above $3000 on May 3, after trading below that price level since the start of the month. At the time of writing, the leading altcoin was valued at $3,104, showing an over 5% increase in the last 24 hours.
Derivatives Market Activity
Interestingly, Coinglass data suggested that the price rally did not spark any significant activity in ETH’s derivatives market. Trading volume in that market only grew by a mere 2%.
The coin’s Futures open interest recorded a minor 3% hike over the same period, standing at $10.68 billion at press time. Conversely, ETH’s Options volume plummeted by over 50% during the period under review.
Options trading allows participants to buy or sell an asset at a specified date. A decline in ETH’s Options volume generally indicates less speculation on its future price movements, as market participants adopt a “wait and see” approach.
The minor increase in ETH’s Futures trading volume, coupled with its declining Options volume, suggests that derivatives market participants are not placing significant bets on its future price direction.
