A controversy has emerged within the Cardano community.
This discussion revolves around the “genesis keys” of Cardano’s blockchain, which were instrumental in securing the chain and protecting the ledger from manipulation when they were used to sign and establish the first block in 2015.
Centralization Concerns
The “genesis keys”, however, also control all protocol rules, which has led to concerns about centralization.
Justin Bons, Founder and CIO of Cyber Capital, ignited the debate on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing the centralizing power that these keys give to Input Output Global (IOG), one of the three main organizations responsible for Cardano’s R&D.
Bons argued that Cardano’s claim to decentralization is a fallacy, stating, “Cardano has “genesis keys”; a multi-sig that controls all rules!” He further stated, “ADA is extremely centralized, as this is uniquely hardcoded into the protocol.”
Community Response
A Cardano user, @JaromirTesar, countered Bons’ claim, arguing that the “genesis keys” are merely a tool for triggering a hard fork and that their use has fixed limits. He believes that the governance of Cardano will soon be in the hands of the community, reducing the functionality of the “genesis keys”.
Despite these concerns, Cardano, the 10th largest cryptocurrency, saw a significant increase in transaction volume, with a 5.03% jump in the last 24 hours and a large transaction volume of 21.34 billion ADA, valued at $10.11 billion.
