Memecoins saw a significant surge in 2024, reaching an impressive market cap of $50.8 billion and delivering high returns.
The VanEck Memecoin Index shed light on the speculative nature of these digital assets.
The Memecoin Phenomenon
In 2024, despite Bitcoin (BTC) making headlines with its spot Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) approval and halving event, the memecoin frenzy was hard to ignore.
CoinGecko reported that the memecoin market cap stood at $50.8 billion.
These digital assets were, reportedly, the most profitable crypto narrative, delivering returns of over 1300% on average across top tokens.
However, this impressive growth was not without controversy.
Memecoin trader, Ansem, commented on the issue during a discussion on the “Unchained” podcast, stating that memecoins were more about grabbing attention than about teams building substantial products.
Memecoin Growth and Controversy
Another memecoin trader, Kelxyz, added that with the ability to tokenize anything in the crypto world, it made sense that memecoins would capture a lot of attention and, in turn, value.
This demonstrated the dual nature of memecoins: they showed both growth and controversy, with the high market cap and returns contrasting with questions about their value and purpose.
VanEck’s entry into the memecoin market further confirmed the popularity of these digital assets.
Matthew Sigel, VanEck’s Head of Digital Assets, announced the launch of the memecoin index on X (formerly Twitter), but also issued a word of caution, stating that these coins were intended for entertainment purposes.
Despite the controversy surrounding memecoins, Ansem emphasized their substantial profits, which he claimed surpassed any associated losses.
He argued that looking at price is valid because anything that people can speculate on, whether it’s stocks, crypto, altcoins, Bitcoin, Ethereum…people can buy the top and lose money, and that this is not unique to memecoins.
