Novogratz Predicts SEC Embracing Ethereum ETF Staking in Next 2 Years

Novogratz Predicts US to Emulate Hong Kong's Approval of ETH ETF Staking

Novogratz Predicts SEC Embracing Ethereum ETF Staking in Next 2 Years

Key Points

  • Mike Novogratz predicts US spot Ethereum ETFs will permit staking within two years, despite regulatory hurdles.
  • Despite potential benefits, concerns persist about increased centralization and concentration risks for the Ethereum network.

Galaxy Digital’s Mike Novogratz has forecasted that staking for US spot Ethereum (ETH) ETFs will occur in the future, regardless of the current stance of the SEC.

During a Consensus 2024 interview, Novogratz stated his belief in the inevitability of yield generation via staking. He suggested that the rules allowing staking would change within 12-24 months of the launch of ETH ETFs without staking.

Projected Timeline and Regulatory Opposition

According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, the launch of spot ETH ETF products could take place by mid-2025 or mid-2026, aligning with Novogratz’s staking projection.

The SEC has consistently been against crypto staking. In 2021, Kraken had to pay $30 million in settlement fees and close its US staking operation. Furthermore, potential US spot Ethereum ETF issuers have had to drop ‘staking provisions’ from their forms prior to SEC approval, suggesting these provisions could have posed compliance issues.

Centralization Risks and International Developments

There are also concerns that US spot ETH ETF staking could enhance the centralization risks of the Ethereum network. An S&P Global report highlighted both potential benefits and drawbacks. On one hand, institutional custodian participation could reduce concentration on the Lido decentralized staking platform. On the other hand, there could be new concentration risks if a single entity stakes the majority of ETH in these ETFs.

According to a Bloomberg report, Hong Kong is planning to approve spot ETH ETF staking, which could increase demand for Hong Kong’s spot ETH ETFs. However, there is no official timeline for this plan.

It is still unclear whether the US regulator will follow Hong Kong’s lead and reconsider its stance on staking and the potential impact on the Ethereum network’s security.
