Key Points
- The fourth Bitcoin halving has activated the Runes protocol, expected to renew interest in Bitcoin.
- Runes, a fungible token standard for Bitcoin, is anticipated to impact the DeFi market positively.
The fourth halving of Bitcoin (BTC) has marked the activation of the Runes protocol. This new development has sparked expectations among market observers who believe it will revive interest in Bitcoin and attract more users to the network.
Runes Protocol: Bitcoin’s New Fungible Token Standard
Runes is a fungible token standard for Bitcoin, similar to Ethereum’s ERC-20. This implies it can be utilized to create a variety of assets, ranging from memecoins to governance tokens on the Bitcoin network.
The $1.5 trillion asset manager, Franklin Templeton, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming protocol, stating it is eager to see if Runes can influence Bitcoin’s fungible token and DeFi market the way Ordinals impacted Bitcoin’s non-fungible token market.
Can Runes Repeat Ordinals’ Success?
Bitcoin Ordinals experienced rapid growth after its launch in December 2022, causing both Bitcoin network activity and fees to surge. The same developer behind the Ordinals protocol, Casey Rodarmor, also created the Runes protocol, raising questions about whether it can replicate Ordinals’ success and enhance Bitcoin’s value.
Despite regular resistance, Bitcoin Ordinals’ market cap now exceeds $2 billion and is considered a “cultural shift” in the Bitcoin network. Market observers are optimistic about Runes’ potential positive impact on Bitcoin. Crypto-analyst Ansem views Runes as part of Bitcoin altcoins worth holding.
On the other hand, some perceive Runes as part of a growing Bitcoin L2 ecosystem that could transform the DeFi sector and compete with Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL). Imran Khan of Alliance DAO, a network for mentoring crypto-founders, expects something similar to Ethereum’s DeFi summer 2020 with Bitcoin, thanks to the upcoming launch of Runes, L2s, memes/ordinals, and DeFi protocols.
Despite the optimism, Rodarmor isn’t sure how Bitcoin maxis will react to Runes following the Bitcoin halving. The Runes protocol is primarily designed to create memecoins and attract “degens” to the Bitcoin network, similar to how meme mania boosted Solana’s network activity. However, it is yet to be seen how the community will respond to it and whether Bitcoin’s value will appreciate post-halving.
